Sparton will collaborate with Raytheon to design, test and deploy a mine neutralization system as part of the latter company’s potential $363 million contract with the U.S. Navy.
De Leon Spring, Fla.-based Sparton said Wednesday it will produce a deployment packaging technology and a wireless communications buoy for Raytheon’s Barracuda mine neutralizer vehicle.
Jim Lackemacher, vice president of Sparton’s engineered components and products segment, said the company intends to leverage its maritime communication, packaging and deployment system expertise to the project.
Barracuda will function as an autonomous unmanned underwater vehicle for the service branch to detect and mitigate bottom, near-surface and drifting mines.
Sparton will also support fabrication of the system.
