AT&T, Cisco, General Electric, IBM and Intel have launched a nonprofit group in an effort to accelerate industry-wide adoption of technology for managing big data and machine-to-machine communications.
The Industrial Internet Consortium will work to develop best practices, interoperability standards and reference architectures to help enterprises adopt systems that can link machines, devices and people, Cisco said Thursday.
ICC membership is open to both public and private sector organizations, Cisco says.
“Cisco is collaborating with industry leading companies to break through the barriers of connecting things in industrial environments safely and securely, and paving the way for the Internet of Things,†said Guido Jouret, vice president of Cisco’s Internet of Things business group.
Boston-based Object Management Group will manage the consortium.
Cisco says the federal government has pledged to invest more than $100 million a year in cyber-physical technology research and development projects.
“The Administration looks forward to working with public-private collaborations like the new IIC to turn innovative Industrial Internet products and systems into new jobs in smart manufacturing, health care, transportation and other areas,” said Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker.
