Northbrook, Illinois-based security company UL has secured a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency grant to perform cybersecurity tests of internet-of-things gateways designed for industrial control system applications.
UL said Wednesday it aims to identify the main areas of an industrial IoT gateway that can affect the cybersecurity of an ICS as well as data that traverses the gateway outside the ICS.
The company will also create a test methodology and security profile to assess security requirements in an effort to provide technical protocols for designing, building, testing and acquiring secure IoT embedded control gateways.
The process will feature user-defined remediation techniques and recommended measures to address security issues, UL added.
UL intends for the method to help increase security awareness among manufacturers and help asset owners mitigate risk, unplanned downtime and asset damage.
