Canada has asked industry to submit proposals for a potential $15 million contract to procure portable satellite communications terminals designed to facilitate the use of the U.S. Air Force’s Wideband Global Satcom system by Canadian military commanders deployed overseas, Space News reported Wednesday.
Maj. Scott Spurr, a spokesman for the Royal Canadian Air Force, said the Canadian military plans to purchase three types of satcom terminals that include the Heavy Strategic Deployable Terminal, David Pugliese writes.
Spurr noted the satcom terminals will work to facilitate transmission of voice, image and data between Canadian forces and commanders on overseas missions, Pugliese reports.
Bids for the procurement contract are due Dec. 8, according to the report.
The Canadian military also plans to allocate $59 million in funds to build three anchor stations that will work to establish communications with the WGS satellite constellation and connect the WGS system to Canadian forces’ communications platforms, the report added.
