Rolls-RoyceRolls-Royce has invested $30 million in an expansion project for a company research-and-development center in Southern California.

The 62,000-square-foot facility in Cypress is dedicated to research related to ceramic matrix composite materials and processes designed for future production of aircraft engine components, Rolls-Royce said Thursday.

Marion Blakey, president and CEO of Rolls-Royce’s North America business, said the expansion aims to develop new systems to enhance the performance of future aircraft engines through the development of “lighter, stronger, composite fiber components.”

“The team here in Cypress will be dedicated to seeing the commercial application of these technologies that will soon be adopted into advanced manufacturing production methods for gas turbine components,” added Blakey.

Rolls-Royce will develop manufacturing processes and produce components for engine test programs at the facility before the manufacturing processes apply to a future dedicated production facility for engine component manufacturing work.

The ceramic matrix composites technology center is a continuation of Rolls-Royce’s effort to invest in composite systems since its acquisition of Hyper-Therm High-Temperature Composites in May 2013.
