BAE Systems has selected Magellan Aerospace to supply horizontal tail assemblies for the conventional takeoff-and-landing variant of the Lockheed Martin-built F-35 aircraft under a two-year, $52 million contract.
Magellan said Thursday it aims to manufacture more than 1,000 ship sets of horizontal tail assemblies over the fighter program’s life cycle.
“Magellan will be producing approximately half of the CTOL horizontal tails required each year,†said Magellan President and CEO Phillip Underwood.
Magellan and BAE Systems inked a letter of intent during the 2006 Farnborough Air Show in the U.K. for the supply of horizontal tails to the global F-35 program and both companies have since invested in facilities, technologies and training for the delivery of the assemblies.
