Commercial imagery provider Planet has been awarded a $20 million introductory contract to supply small satellite imagery of Earth’s landmass to the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency.
NGA will have access to a global imagery collection called the Planet Feed every 15 days and share the feed with the National System for Geospatial Intelligence and civil federal community, the agency said Monday.
The contract contains a seven-month period of performance that began Sept. 15.
NGA Director Robert Cardillo told the May 2016 GEOINT Symposium in Washington, D.C., that the company seeks to fulfill the mission requirements of commercial space partners as they provide higher revisit capabilities this year.
Planet Feed contains multispectral imagery such as unrectified and orthorectified images and orthomosaic single-pass tiles.
NGA said the global coverage and high temporal frequency of Planet’s imagery collection can support foundation GEOINT, humanitarian assistance, disaster response and intelligence missions.
The company designs, builds and operates a constellation of Earth observation nanosatellites, NGA added.
