The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency‘s defense sciences office will host a proposers day to discuss a program that aims to develop optical systems with upgraded performance, new functions and reduced size and weight.
DARPA said Monday the proposers day for the EXTREME Optics and Imaging program will take place Sept. 1 via webcast in an effort to help familiarize potential proposers with the program’s objectives.
“We’ve seen significant technical advances in recent years in the communities of optical system design, materials science and fabrication, and multiscale modeling and optimization… EXTREME seeks to capitalize on this momentum by uniting these separate communities to revolutionize optics and imaging as we know it,†said Predrag Milojkovic, a DARPA program manager.
DARPA noted the EXTREME program will work to develop new engineered optical materials that can manipulate light beyond the classical rules of reflection and refraction as well as address multiscale modeling for design and optimization of EnMats across different scales.
A team of engineered material design and fabrication, multiscale modeling/simulation/optimization and optical system design personnel will gather to help demonstrate a volumetric optical element that simultaneously performs functions such as imaging, spectrum analysis and polarization measurements.
