Intel and AT&T have partnered to evaluate how an unmanned aircraft vehicle can stream video and transmit flight information and telematics through the Long-Term Evolution wireless communications network.
Intel will test the transmission functions of a Yuneec Typhoon H UAV fitted with Intel RealSense technology over AT&T’s core LTE network as part of the Intel Drone Zone, AT&T said Monday.
Chris Penrose, senior vice president of Internet of Things solutions at AT&T, said the test will be held at the Mobile Trade Congress in Spain and verify new business use cases for the drone technology.
The companies will also test how the LTE network allows the drone to perform its functions at higher altitudes.
AT&T said the team aims to address challenges such as safety, security and communications interference for drones flying beyond line of sight.
“Intel believes UAVs have great potential — from inspections, precision agriculture to deliveries of consumer goods and providing emergency disaster relief,” said Anil Nanduri, vice president of the new technology group and a general manager of the perceptual computing group at Intel.
“We want to grow this market through our collaborations and by integrating new technologies and compute to UAVs.”
