The U.S. Army received 115 production prototype units of a platform built by L3Harris Technologies based on its other electro-optical fire control systems and in support of the service branch's Next Generation Squad Weapon program.
The NGSW Fire Control technology uses environmental sensors, ballistic computation and range-finding capabilities to potentially increase weapon efficiency and decrease the time needed to engage targets, L3Harris said Monday.
Lynn Bollengier, president of integrated vision solutions at L3Harris, said the NGSW-FC is intended to boost soldiers' situational awareness and provide them with enhanced threat detection, identification and engagement capabilities on the battlefield.
L3Harris incorporated Leupold & Stevens' optical assemblies into the technology in an effort to meet the Army's requirements under the NGSW program.
The Army will test the prototypes and conduct touchpoints to determine the company that will receive the production contract for NGSW.
In addition to prototype delivery, the company has also trained the service branch in using the weapon system.
