Jay Garcia, Global Veterans Program lead, program administrator, and federal liaison for managed security service providers at Fortinet, said in a blog post published Thursday organizations should assist military veterans in their transition to cybersecurity jobs to address workforce gaps.
Garcia added that organizations may utilize training, mentorship programs and professional networking to help veterans secure internships and employment in the cybersecurity industry.
“An effective program needs to cover every aspect of the transition, from skills training to the job search, including how to set up a LinkedIn profile, how to target certain jobs and how to prepare for an interview — including what kinds of questions the candidate will be asked and how they should dress for an interview,†said Garcia.
Garcia said 53 percent of organizations have reported gaps on cybersecurity skills in 2019, an increase from the 42 percent in 2018. In line with the findings, he noted that trained personnel are needed to deliver efficient deployment, maintenance, modernization and implementation of security technologies to help protect the global digital landscape.
