A Raytheon-led consortium of technology companies and the U.S. Air Force have teamed up to modernize a command-and-control system designed to monitor and track space debris.
The Air Force Life Cycle Management Center and the Raytheon-led team reproduced the Space Defense Operations Center’s capabilities through a new hardware system, SPADOC Emulation Analysis Risk Reduction, the company said Wednesday.
"Within just a few months we brought together a team, developed the technology to modernize it, got it on contract and held a series of demos to prove it worked. We went from concept to proving the solution in less than a year, which is really remarkable,†said Dave Fuino, program director for Raytheon’s intelligence, information and services business.
The emulated SPEARR technology is designed to reduce cooling and power consumption and requires minimal maintenance.
Fuino noted the company collaborated with a.i. solutions, E&M Technologies, Zivaro, Fundamental Software and M2 Technologies to work on the emulation technology.
Bob Taylor, head of the Air Force legacy space branch, said the service plans to assess options for deploying SPEARR, which he said has helped reduce the obsolescence risk of the legacy SPADOC system.
