Hughes Network Systems has been chosen to produce and deliver 200 9211 Broadband Global Area Network satellite terminals to the U.S. Navy‘s Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Atlantic.
The company said Monday its BGAN device offers Wi-Fi access for multiple users and is designed to facilitate satellite connectivity at a speed of up to 650 kilobytes per second.
The rugged platform is also built with a compass and an audio tone intended to help operators acquire signals.
Rick Lober, vice president and general manager of defense and intelligence systems at Hughes, said the company intends for its tablet-sized terminal to support warfighter communications even in a demanding environment.
SSC Atlantic placed the order for the 9211 BGAN systems through Hughes’ partner Marshall Communications.
