General Dynamics' NASSCO subsidiary has commissioned a new panel line for steel welding activities in a move to expand capabilities for the company's shipbuilding efforts in San Diego.
The company said Friday its new automated production line is designed to weld five-millimeter plates for lighter components with the use of hybrid laser arc welding and numerically controlled robotic technologies.
NASSCO President Kevin Graney said the group searched for thin plate welding platforms from across the world to identify shipbuilding manufacturing components.
Work at the San Diego shipyard includes construction of an oiler vessel and an expeditionary sea base for the U.S. Navy.
