Intelsat CEO Stephen Spengler has been appointed a commissioner of a United Nations-backed organization that aims to advance the use of broadband technology at developing countries and underserved communities.

Spengler has indicated he will support the Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development’s efforts to collaborate with the public and private sectors to help create a “digitally inclusive global society,” Intelsat announced Thursday.

“Simple and affordable access to information and broadband technology supports and drives economic growth, improves access to healthcare and education and importantly, builds bridges across communities,” the satellite services company executive said.

The Broadband Commission formed in 2010 and advocates for the propagation of broadband connectivity services around the world.

The International Telecommunications Union and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization jointly oversee the commission.
