Symantec Launches Research Campaign to Help FBI Track Down ‘Bayrob’ Cyber Crime Group - top government contractors - best government contracting eventA security response team at Symantec collected intelligence data to help the FBI track and facilitate arrest of three cyber criminals in Romania that are part of a cyber crime group called “Bayrob.”

Symantec said Friday the group conducted computer intrusion, credit card fraud and auto auction scams that resulted in the theft of up to $35 million from victims.

The company’s security response unit has collected information on malicious programs, infection vectors and exploitation techniques used by Bayrob against its victims since 2007.

Symantec also conducted research into the types of Bayrob malware, the group’s use of money mules and how the cyber group developed into a botnet of more than 300,000 compromised computers for used in cryptocurrency mining operations.

The arrest performed by law enforcement authorities in Romania earlier this year led to the extradition of the three cyber criminals to the U.S.

Mike Fey, president and chief operating officer at Symantec, said the company’s move to combine its threat intelligence data with Blue Coat has resulted in 500,000 additional detections on a daily basis for use in cyber attack detection.
