A report by BAE Systems has found that the cyber attack launched against the central bank of Bangladesh is associated with the data breach at Sony Pictures Entertainment in 2014, Reuters reported Friday.
Jim Finkle and Sanjeev Miglani write BAE’s report says the malware used to steal $81 million from Bangladesh Bank’s account with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York is similar to that used by hackers in the “Operation Blockbuster†campaign that includes the Sony hack.
FBI has stated that the government of North Korea is behind the breach at Sony.
According to Reuters, the BAE report also linked the Bangladesh heist to a cyber attack launched against an unnamed commercial bank in Vietnam.
BAE said in the report that it found the connection between the bank hack in Bangladesh and Operation Blockbuster following an analysis of millions of samples of malicious files.
Adrian Nish, head of threat intelligence at BAE, told Reuters that the company focused its investigation on technical evidence found in the three cyber attacks.
Finkle and Miglani write that the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication, a cooperative that provides a network for international fund transfers, said the cyber heist at Bangladesh Bank is part of a larger cyber campaign against banks.
