Orbital ATKOrbital ATK has received a $27 million production order for additional DSU-33D/B proximity sensors under a follow-on contract to a 2013 full-rate production award from the U.S. Air Force.

The company said Wednesday the sensor works to support precision detonation and maximize the weapon’s blast and fragmentation effects through a fire pulse to the FMU-139 and FMU-152 bomb fuzes and a read of the weapon’s height above a surface target.

“Accuracy and dependability on the battlefield are vital,” said Cary Ralston, vice president and general manager of the defense systems group’s missile products division at Orbital ATK.

He noted that the company has supplied the DSU-33D/B sensors to U.S. soldiers since 1999.

Orbital ATK will produce the sensors at the Allegany Ballistics Laboratory in West Virginia.
