JPSSExelis has picked Sierra Nevada Corp. to construct the radiation instrument for NASA’s Joint Polar Satellite System, Satnews reported Thursday.

The radiation budget instrument will work to scan the Earth and measure the amount of reflected sunlight and emitted thermal radiation for the JPSS-2 mission, according to the report.

NASA will use the JPSS-2 satellite to Earth observation data in order to help researchers monitor and forecast climate, the report says.

Sierra Nevada will also design the azimuth rotation module, which will function as a rotational stage for RBI and provide the interface between the radiation instrument and the satellite, Satnews reports.

JPSS-2 is scheduled to launch in the fourth quarter of 2021, according to Satnews.
