Deloitte reports that the role of the chief information officer at federal agencies may extend to business-IT integration and talent management as the government undertakes technology initiatives, FedScoop reported Monday.
Billy Mitchell writes that these future agencywide initiatives will call on federal CIOs to manage potential organizational, operational and other changes over the next 18 to 24 months.
“Many technology leaders in the public sector suddenly find themselves operating not merely as enablers of broader strategies, but at the center of important decisions about strategy and the future of government,” Deloitte predicts in the report, according to FedScoop.
Mark White, Deloitte principal and global consulting chief technology officer, said, “The temptation might be to feel threatened, but the recommendation is to obviously step up and play the coordination role.”
Mitchell writes that the company also points to the future need for federal CIOs to manage the IT workforce in terms of eliminating the skills gap and guiding recruitment and the retraining of STEM workers.
