electronic health record EHRIBM has invested in Modernizing Medicine to help that company further develop and launch a Watson-powered, cloud-based mobile clinical decision support application into the marketplace.

Modernizing Medicine aims for its schEMA app to analyze large volumes of medical literature to offer clinicians point-of-care data, IBM said Thursday.

“IBM’s investment will help speed the introduction of their schEMA app and demonstrates how Watson can be used by medical professionals to improve how they practice evidence-based medicine,” said Stephen Gold, vice president of IBM’s Watson group.

SchEMA is designed to allow dermatologists to ask about possible symptoms and treatment options using natural language and receive answers from the technology within seconds.

Modernizing Medicine recently secured $20 million in a round of Series D financing from IBM and several other investors and plans to use the money to expand the use of its platform to other medical specialties.

The Boca Raton, Florida-based company also offers an electronic health records system called the Electronic Medical Assistant, as well as billing, inventory and revenue management tools for multiple specialists.
