Huntington Ingalls Industries has been awarded a $23 million contract to help the U.S. Navy develop a construction plan for the USS John F. Kennedy aircraft carrier, the Daily Press reported Thursday.
Hugh Lessig writes the goal is for HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding division to apply cost and efficiency measures the shipbuilder used during the USS Gerald R. Ford design and development process to manage the Kennedy project.
“We’re right on the front edge of getting to a contract on the construction of the follow-on carrier CVN-79,” HII CEO Mike Petters told audience during a presentation at J.P. Morgan‘s Aviation, Transportation and Industrials forum.
“Beyond that, we’ll start the discussion of how do you contract for the next carrier,” Petters added, according to the report.
According to Lessig’s article, HII has secured at least $3.1 billion in funds to deliver construction preparation services for the Navy’s new class of aircraft carriers.
