Stephanie Hill, vice president and general manager of Lockheed Martin‘s information systems and global solutions-civil business, believes that workplace mentorship provides an opportunity for junior employees to connect with and learn from managers.

Lango Deen writes Monday on the Black Engineer website that Hill discussed her own mentorship experiences during a recent BEYA STEM webinar.

Hill, the recipient of the 2014 Black Engineer of the Year Award, said that her mentors over the years have helped guide her career and decision-making, and that she herself now acts as a mentor to students.

“As companies, we have an obligation not only to make ourselves available but to establish programs and join with organizations that have mentoring programs,” she said.

Hill, an inductee into Executive Mosaic’s Wash100 list for 2015, noted that events like the BEYA STEM and Women of Color conferences present an opportunity to meet with potential mentors and also access the community and its resources.
