Airbus‘ defense and space division has completed a demonstration of its SONEX-P system that the company built for airport authorities, law enforcement units and homeland security agencies to use to detect and identify explosives, chemical and other airport threats.
Michael Cosentino, president of Airbus Defense and Space, said Thursday that the auto-detection system aims to provide greater safety for explosives technicians and first responders.
According to Airbus, SONEX-P uses neutron technology, 3D imaging and a laptop interface to enable remote analysis of the potential threat.
The device itself distinguishes between a threat and non-threat condition, Airbus says.
Airbus added that the system consists of a laptop computer and the man-portable detection head.
The demonstration was held in front of organizations such as the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, Virginia State Police and the Domestic Nuclear Defeat Organization.
