Bechtel will provide management and other preliminary services to prepare for the construction of the Louisiana International Gulf Transfer Terminal off the state’s Gulf Coast under an agreement with the LIGTT Project Company.
It will support the facility design, procurement and integration with the terminal operator for Louisiana’s planned 250-acre, deep-water, cargo transfer port, Bechtel said Wednesday.
According to Walker Kimball, the Bechtel’s managing director for global infrastructure, the project is expected to benefit the U.S. by making it able to handle larger vessels.
“It will also expand America’s shipping capacity by using a hub-and-spoke system to transport goods to and from America’s heartland via the Mississippi River and its tributaries,” added Patrick Harvey, principal of LIGTT Project Company.
The port is expected to bolster the country’s international trade and bring at least 33,000 new jobs to both Louisiana and Mississippi.
