Lockheed Martin is observing National Engineers Week by hosting programs to promote education and careers in the science, technology, engineering and math fields to students in the country.

The company has signed a $6 million agreement with Project Lead the Way to expand STEM in various urban school districts, Lockheed announced Tuesday.

“With an employee population that includes 60,000 engineers, scientists and IT professionals, advancing STEM education is a critical focus for Lockheed Martin,” said Ray O. Johnson, Lockheed senior vice president and chief technology officer.

“Innovation, technology and engineering continue to be essential to America’s economic development.”

This week, the company will hold tours and demonstrations for school groups. host on-site student contests and school visits.

Lockheed has also partnered with the National Geographic Society to update its “Engineers in the Classroom” program, which is intended to give company engineers tools and materials for experiments, lessons and stories to share with students in classrooms.
