HARRIS1Harris Corp. has started to deliver hardware and software systems for installation in a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration satellite network after the equipment passed a pre-shipment review.

Those systems will be used to build the ground segment for NOAA’s Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite – R series program, Harris said Thursday.

“We have worked closely with NOAA and our industry partners to achieve this key milestone, providing the foundation for upcoming deliveries of weather product generation software later in 2014,” said Romy Olaisen, vice president of civil programs at Harris Government Communications Systems.

GOES-R series satellites are designed to supply imagery and atmospheric measurements for weather forecasts, as well as to detect and monitor hurricanes.

Harris is scheduled to install first the 89 racks of equipment in April 2014 at NOAA’s facilities in Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland and the GOES-R satellite will be launched in early 2016.

The Harris technologies will work to process and distribute data to NOAA’s National Weather Service and other users.
