AirbusAirbus‘ defense and space subsidiary has received the approval of the European Aviation Safety Agency for the design and development of potential civil-certified unmanned aircraft systems.

The Design Organization Approval for UAS expands the company’s existing DOA for conventional manned aircraft in support of efforts to achieve civil type certification for Airbus DS aerial drones, the company said Thursday.

“Establishing the UAS category in DOAs will be a key element in the regulatory regime needed to foster UAS development in Europe,” said Jane Rosenmann, head of UAS at Airbus DS.

Airbus DS added the approval comes two years after it submitted the Atlante UAS to EASA for civil certification.

The company has worked with EASA to help establish certification processes based on existing processes for manned aircraft systems, as well as fill gaps in set procedures and practices.
