Mitre has launched a contest that aims to encourage students and entrepreneurs to develop new systems and techniques designed to detect and intercept unmanned aerial systems that pose security or safety risks in urban areas.
The two-phase Countering UAS Challenge seeks new systems that work to identify and interdict unauthorized, small UAS that weigh less than 5 pounds, Mitre said Thursday.
Participants have until Feb. 7, 2016, to submit white papers that detail their platforms or methods as part of the contest’s initial phase.
The second phase will involve a live flight evaluation of selected systems in the fall of 2016.
The winning participant will receive a prize of up to $100,000.
