Bae-systems-logo_ExecutiveBiz1BAE Systems‘ electronic systems business will provide 22 “identification friend or foe” interrogators to the U.S. Navy under an $8.5 million contract modification, Intelligent Aerospace reported Monday.

John Keller writes that the company will supply its AN/UPX-41(C) digital interrogators to help surface ships and ground installations distinguish between friendly and enemy aircraft.

The Navy will use 14 of the IFF interrogators, with the rest purchased by the government of Japan, the report said.

According to the report, a digital IFF interrogator utilizes signals from aircraft transponders to help determine if an approaching aircraft is a potential threat.

BAE’s AN/UPX-41(C) also works to support air defense, air traffic control, range instrumentation and weapons systems applications, Keller writes.

The company will also provide 45 Mode 5 IFF field change kits to the Navy and 12 to Japan as part of the contract.

The report said BAE will perform contract work at its facility in Greenlawn, New York, through December 2016.
