Government contractors and cybersecurity professionals discussed the challenge of simplifying federal agencies’ efforts to protect their information technology infrastructure from cyber attacks during the RSA Public Sector conference held Monday in San Francisco, CyberScoop reported Tuesday. Steve Harris, senior vice president and general manager of Dell EMC’s federal business, told the publication on the sidelines of the conference about the complexity and issues posed by security systems in an IT infrastructure to agency employees.He discussed an approach that agencies can implement to streamline their cybersecurity efforts.

Some industry experts say the Section 809 panel’s recommendation to exempt the Pentagon from the Clinger-Cohen Act highlights the need to fix the budgeting approach to provide agencies the ability to facilitate the information technology acquisition process, Federal News Network reported Friday. Mark Forman, vice president and global head of public sector at Unisys, said the Section 809 report suggests that agencies have now shifted to buying IT as-a-service, instead of treating or procuring IT as a capital asset.

The Defense Human Resources Activity has asked industry to submit white papers on commercial technology platforms that could help federal agencies carry out career development and retraining initiatives for government employees, Bloomberg Government reported Friday. The agency released the request for information on Feb. 26 as the government prepares to launch a pilot program to assess the capabilities of learning management systems and processes to advance skills development among federal employees.

Eric Trexler, vice president of global governments and critical infrastructure at Forcepoint, has said government agencies should build up trust when it comes to cybersecurity and one of the first steps is improving transparency with contractors. Trexler wrote in a Nextgov article published Friday that having “security trust ratings” could help agencies improve trust and achieve greater transparency.

Researchers from Anomali's research arm have identified a malicious server linked to two phishing campaigns that try to deceive government contractors to send sensitive information to threat actors. Anomali Labs said Monday its researchers detected on Feb. 23 the online bidding-themed phishing schemes, which lead contractors to fake landing pages mimicking the Department of Labor and the Department of Transportation’s eProcurement portal.
