Rudolf Fredrik Berg established Skanska in Malmo, southern Sweden, around 1887. It was officially registered as A.B. Skanska Cementgjuteriet in the Stockholm Exchange A list but later changed its name to Skanska in 1984.

Skanska USA’s first U.S. project was the 63rd Street Subway line in New York in 1971.
