Google will collaborate with NASA and multiple technology companies to develop new tools to monitor commercial unmanned aerial system operations in U.S. airspace, Bloomberg reported Friday.
Alan Levin writes Google, Amazon, Harris Corp. and Verizon are among the companies that have agreed to help the agency build a UAS traffic management infrastructure.
More than 100 other private and academic organizations are also interested in joining the initiative, according to Bloomberg.
The platform will be designed to coordinate flights of small, low-altitude civilian drones and prevent midair aircraft collisions, the report said.
NASA plans to hold a conference this week to discuss UAS utilization and management issues with the private sector.
Levin reports that federal officials have not yet decided whether the government or industry should run the future drone air traffic management system.
