smiths detectionSmiths Detection has secured an Option I contract to develop an air monitoring system for the U.S. Army as part of the service’s Next Generation Chemical Detector program.

The NGCD platform aims to develop and acquire detectors that could be used by soldiers to detect toxic industrial chemicals, chemical warfare and nontraditional agents during missions, the company said Wednesday.

The contract from the Joint Project Manager for Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Contamination Avoidance calls for the company and its subcontractor 908 Devices to jointly develop and test technologies for the NGCD program.

Stephen Esposito, vice president and general manager of Smiths Detection’s defense solutions unit, said the award “will build on our… chemical detection program… and our partnership with the U.S. Department of Defense.”
