Systems Made Simple‘s John Reeher and Chris Jackson have outlined several tactics they believe can help government agencies move their IT systems into a cloud environment in a guest column for GCN published Thursday.
Reeher, a system architect, and Jackson, a subject-matter expert on infrastructure services, write that agencies should plan ahead by determining the right technology, security controls and relevant regulatory requirements.
Among the seven tactics they recommended for a cloud migration project, Reeher and Jackson urged federal IT managers to selected cloud service providers certified to host government applications and choose a service that balances cost and security.
Reeher and Jackson say agencies should find the appropriate cloud provider based on the required protection level of their data, which they believe could mean additional costs.
They add that agencies should determine which data and applications can go to the cloud based on their own information security policies and privacy regulations.
