The Department of Energy will work with other federal agencies and companies on a collaborative effort that seeks to harness the power of quantum technologies to advance national security, improve the economy, achieve energy security and support sustainability goals.
DOE said Monday it will partner with the Department of Defense, NASA, Infleqtion, Nebula Space Enterprise and Accenture Federal Services on the Quantum & Space Collaboration.
Through the initiative, the participants will drive demonstrations of quantum technologies in space, including quantum sensing, quantum-secure communications and quantum technology integration with classical computing in orbital environments.
DOE will work with the Air Force Research Laboratory’s Space Vehicles Directorate, which will contribute its expertise and capabilities in space-based communications, space situational awareness, small satellite development and position, navigation and timing, among others.
“This Collaboration has been long in the making and is vital for ensuring that the United States remains at the forefront of innovation,” said Rima Kasia Oueid, lead/architect for the Quantum Space & Collaboration and senior commercialization executive at the DOE’s Office of Technology Transitions.
“Our target is to begin space environmental demonstrations using quantum technologies in early 2024 and to begin evaluating use cases and new commercialization opportunities,” added Oueid.
