General Dynamics’ Applied Physical Sciences arm subcontracted General Atomics’ electromagnetic systems business for a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency-initiated program on propulsion technology.

GA-EMS announced Friday that it will be responsible for the design, engineering and analysis of the propulsion system for the Advanced Propulsor, Experimental program.

In April, Applied Physical Sciences won the prime cost-plus-fixed-fee contract to innovate new propulsion technologies for submarine or unmanned maritime vehicles.

GA-EMS will participate in Phase I of the APEX program, a 24-month project with a base performance period of 12 months and option periods lasting nine months and three months. In addition to design and engineering, the company will also conduct testing and manufacturing of the resulting product.

“We look forward to working with General Dynamics to develop and explore propulsion concepts focusing on efficiency, signature, mechanical design and limits, and operational considerations,” GA-EMS President Scott Forney remarked.
