Rich Uhlig: Intel Explores Use of Emerging Tech to Improve Virtual Work, Privacy

Rich Uhlig, asenior fellow at Intel, wrotein an editorial publishedTuesday that the company is advancing research on emerging technologies toimprove learning and virtual work experiences, speed up pathogen surveillanceand protect privacy in health data sharing efforts during the COVID-19pandemic.

Uhlig said Intel Labs has begun to conductresearch on immersive telepresence tech platforms, such as computationalacoustics and camera-array technologies, to counter “virtual fatigue”syndrome facing teleworkers.

The company is exploring the potential useof its Intel Software Guard Extensions platforms in a set of applications toprotect privacy in contact-tracing efforts.

Uhlig, managing director of Intel Labs, saidthe company is also looking at ways on how to apply its Optane technology in conductingsurveillance of SARS-CoV-2 and other pathogens.

“The result will be faster and moreaccurate comparisons across millions of genomes that can help with COVID-19 andfuture pandemic responses,” he added.
