SSL, NASA Partner on Two ‘Tipping Point’ Space Tech Platforms; Richard White Quoted

NASA has picked Maxar Technologies’ SSL subsidiary to develop two spacecraft technologies under the agency’s Tipping Point program.

SSL will work with NASA through a public-private partnership to demonstrate an in-orbit fuel transfer system to support on-orbit refueling and servicing missions, Maxar said Monday.

The company and the space agency will also develop a dual-mode electric propulsion engine for future space exploration missions.

Richard White, president of SSL’s government system business, said the company will leverage its experience in robotics and electric propulsion for space missions in support of U.S. agencies’ objectives.

“Powerful and cost-effective propulsion systems and reuse of assets already on-orbit will ultimately help build a better world and propel humanity’s exploration of space,” he added.

NASA considers a technology at a tipping point if the platform demonstrates a possibility to transition to a commercial space application.
