The U.S. Naval Air Systems Command is seeking proposals for the development of a hard-kill self-protection countermeasure system that would protect large aircraft like transports and tankers in the event of open conflict, The Drive reported Wednesday.
The proposed aircraft self-defense mechanism should be capable of defeating up to 10 incoming missiles.
NAVAIR’s interest in building an HKSPCS was prompted by the U.S. military’s concern over the vulnerability of its support aircraft to increasingly sophisticated air-to-air and surface-to-air missiles, and allied technologies.
The Navy’s complete specifications for the countermeasure system can be found in a request for information that NAVAIR posted on FedBizOpps on May 3.
