Airbus’ defense and space division will evaluate the use of its new radar technology for air traffic management operations under a contract with the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority.
Airbus designed the “passive radar†system to analyze radiation reflections from radio and television stations in order to identify objects, the company said Friday.
The radar system works to measure variations in the signals reflected from aircraft compared with the original broadcast signal.

Airbus says a passive radar system relying on existing air signals helps to minimize additional emissions in populated areas.
The company has been developing the technology since 2006 and recently tested a working system designed to detect ultralight aircraft from a distance.
