Raytheon-logoRaytheon Co. has launched a $125,000 scholarship program aimed to help students pursuing a four-year degree related to science, technology, engineering and math or any related field.

The Raytheon- Zumwalt Scholarship, established through the Anchor Scholarship Foundation, is also meant to honor Adm. Elmo R. Zumwalt Jr., a former chief of Naval Operations, Raytheon announced Wednesday.

To qualify for the program, a student must be either a dependent child or a spouse of an active duty or retired U.S. Navy Surface Force. Sponsored students will receive a $20,000 scholarship, or $5000 annually, subject to certain conditions such as a sustained 3.0 GPA.

“With this scholarship, our goal is to support our extended Navy family and the educational pursuits of our next generation of technologists, engineers and scientists – future innovators who exemplify Zumwalt’s legacy, said Kevin Peppe, Raytheon vice president of integrated defense systems’ seapower capability systems business.

Zumwalt served as chief of naval operations from 1970 to 1974 and was the youngest four-star admiral in history. He developed grievance systems and ombudsmen for enlisted personnel and was famous for “Z-grams.” directives for reform implementation related to living conditions, terms of leave and dress code.
