BAE Systems has reported that a U.K. air force squadron fired air-to-surface and air-to-air missiles from a Eurofighter Typhoon during recent trials aimed to showcase the aircraft’s weapon upgrades.
The Royal Air Force’s Test and Evaluation Squadron was the first unit to fire-test the Storm Shadow and Meteor weapons in trials as part of Project Centurion, BAE said Tuesday.
RAF aims to transition its combat air capability from its current Tornado aircraft to Typhoon by 2019.
Group Capt. John Cunningham, RAF’s Project Centurion lead, said the military service also seeks to integrate Brimstone missile, Paveway IV laser guided bombs, Litening III targeting pod and Advanced Short Range Air-to-Air Missile with the branch’s Typhoon fleet.
The Eurofighter Typhoon is a joint program of BAE, Leonardo and Airbus.
