Davis Johnson, vice president of U.S. public sector at Riverbed Technology, has said federal agencies should advance network modernization efforts as they move to the cloud.
Johnson wrote in a FedTech article published Wednesday that agencies seeking to build up end-user experiences with cloud-based services should implement the “four pillars†of network modernization that include planning, migration, management and improvement.
Prior to cloud migration, agencies should create a “solid network plan†and direct chief information officers to conduct a network audit in order to develop a “mapped-out network†that works to support desktops, mobile devices and applications, he noted.
An upgraded network works to help agency technology leaders establish policies across a range of networks and determine the impact of apps on network performance.
Johnson also cited the Defense Department’s effort to have an updated software-defined wide-area network in order to build up the agency’s cyber defense, achieve agility and optimize network topology.
DoD’s “push to upgrade its networks should serve as a signal to all agencies that improved applications need improved networks to meet mission objectives,†he added.
