A team composed of Leonardo DRS and Moog has secured a $16 million contract to help the U.S. Army develop a technology for soldiers to identify, detect and track unmanned aerial system threats.
The team will equip a mobile counter-UAS platform with Leonardo DRS’Â surveillance and battlefield reconnaissance equipment, Moog’s reconfigurable integrated-weapons platform and government-provided technologies, Leonardo DRS said Monday.
“We are proud to support the Army’s urgent requirement to protect soldiers from the growing threats by small unmanned aircraft,” said Aaron Hankins, vice president and general manager of Leonardo DRS’ land systems unit.
The service branch awarded the contract under its Mobile Low, Slow Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Integrated Defense System Increment 1 program.
Leonardo DRS noted the project supports near-term tests meant to inform requirements and government decisions on the fielding of multiple production systems by the early summer of 2018.
The Army aims to install the resulting counter-UAS technology on two mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicles.
