IBM will build and operate an on-premise private cloud platform and provide infrastructure-as-a-service support under a potential five-year, $62 million task order with the U.S. Army.

The company said Wednesday it will design the cloud platform for the service branch’s Redstone Arsenal facility in Alabama as part of the Army Private Cloud Enterprise program.

The task order has a one-year base period and four option years and was awarded in October under the Army Private Cloud 2 indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract.

IBM has Impact-Level 5 provisional authorization from the Defense Information Systems Agency that permits it to run IaaS applications on the service branch’s IT systems.

“Clients today are increasingly looking at the cloud as a pathway to innovation,” said Sam Gordy, general manager of IBM’s federal business.

Gordy added the company’s cloud platform will work to help the Army eliminate and mitigate security issues associated with “multiple ingress and egress points.”

The military branch plans to migrate up to 35 applications to the private cloud during the first year and expects IBM to secure DISA IL-6 authorization within a year to host “secret”-level data workloads.
