The U.S. Navy has awarded a Huntington Ingalls Industries division a $12 million contract to perform planning work on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) aircraft carrier.
HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding division will conduct fabrication, material procurement and planning work at its facility in Newport News, Virginia, through Sept. 17, 2017, HII said Friday.
“Maintaining the in-service aircraft carrier fleet involves complex work that requires significant planning and preparation,†said Chris Miner, vice president of in-service aircraft carrier programs at Newport News Shipbuilding.
Miner added that the planning period aims to create a framework that will work to facilitate project execution.
USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) is the service branch’s second Nimitz-class aircraft carrier and is based at Naval Station Norfolk in Virginia.
