The Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. has awarded a $500,000 grant to a business group to perform environmental remediation work on a property in Marinette, Wisconsin, to facilitate the construction of a 23,000-square-foot maritime facility, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Thursday.
Rick Barrett writes the Marinette County Association for Business and Industry will use the grant to clean up the 2-acre site to pave the way for the establishment of the Wisconsin Maritime Center of Excellence that will support the construction of the U.S. Navy’s littoral combat ships.
The maritime center is scheduled to open in 2017 and will be used to support the shipbuilding industry’s research and training efforts as well as startups, Barrett reports.
The report said the facility will also include space for the service branch’s LCS personnel and will be built next to Fincantieri Marinette Marine, which partners with Lockheed Martin on the Navy’s LCS construction program.
