Gemini, Google’s family of multimodal artificial intelligence applications, has received “High” certification under the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program. Google said in a blog Tuesday that the top security FedRAMP authorization for Gemini comes as the first for generative AI tools.
The authorization, which covers Gemini in Workspace apps and the Gemini app, provides confidence to users in deploying GenAI applications without spending on costly supplementary technologies and complex configurations, the company added.
App Features and Capabilities
The offerings under Gemini in Workspace include the apps Google Docs, Drive, Gmail, Meet, Sheets and Slides. According to Google, AI’s integration in the tools enables faster and more efficient team communications and workflows.
The company also said that through the Gemini app, team members can jumpstart various tasks, such as research and analysis, using their laptop or mobile device. The app’s users can build Gems, customized Gemini versions, to tackle repetitive procedures or generate new, in-depth task inputs, Google noted.
The company attributed Gemini’s fast achievement of the high FedRAMP authorization on Workspace’s innovative and secure system design. Google said Workspace departs from other services offering dedicated “Gov Clouds” and instead provides a cloud infrastructure designed for all consumers to ensure that both government and commercial customers can access uniform benefits, capacity and features that support compliance requirements.
Prior Complementary Developments
In November, Google announced the launch of a dedicated Gemini app for iPhone1, downloadable for free from App Store worldwide. Before the launching, Apple was reported discussing with Google in March 2024 the possibility of licensing the Gemini engine into new iPhone software features.
The Gemini authorization followed the FedRAMP High certification announced in May for more than 100 additional Google Cloud services and capabilities geared to support various federal missions. These FedRAMP-authorized services are accessible via Google Assured Workloads to government customers looking to support artificial intelligence, data and analytics and cybersecurity workloads.
