BigBear.ai, an artificial intelligence-powered decision intelligence services provider, has booked a contract from the Department of Defense’s Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office to further develop its Virtual Anticipation Network, or VANE, prototype.
The McLean, Virginia-based company said Saturday the contract aims to provide the CDAO and Office of the Secretary of Defense with enhanced capabilities to identify and assess news media from possible foreign adversaries.

VANE is an AI-driven platform intended to identify emerging trends and topics about potential foreign adversarial areas of interest, allowing the CDAO and OSD to quickly make informed evaluations of media data critical to national security.
The platform is designed to aggregate and analyze extensive data to provide clarity in multi-domain environments for military and government applications. This allows VANE to predict adversarial activity in complex situations.
The near-peer adversary geopolitical risk analysis platform was initially developed with the Irregular Warfare Technical Support Directorate. It achieved awardable status on the CDAO Tradewinds Solutions Marketplace in April 2024. The prototype award signifies the progression from a research prototype to an operational prototype. The contract includes a transition plan for the advanced AI platform’s deployment on CDAO’s Advana environment. This is intended to provide the DOD’s Combatant Commands access to VANE.
“By advancing VANE within CDAO, we are arming our warfighters with sophisticated intelligence capabilities to leverage foreign insights critical to the safety of our nation and those protecting it,” stated Ryan Legge, president of national security at BigBear.ai.
